Soldering Madness!

I've been having such a blast getting back into my soldering! After being inspired by my good friend Irene from Garden of Beaden, I quickly went back to my studio to create! Now I'm in need of some more supplies! After inspiration hit, I have some new ideas to use with the new beveled pieces I purchased this past week, so stay tuned...oh, and these new goodies will be revealed this march at Glitterfest Gang! Plus, there's the added bonus of having two blondes in the truck that always seem to take the scenic route to their destinations. (not because we LIKE the road less traveled, we're always lost!) Until Kat asked directions from a local tow truck driver- good one Kat, you saved the day and the adventure! It never fails, even if we've been there before! Also, we gab too much on the road and always miss our turnoff...

Matilda's Mouse Adventure!

Kat and I just love our visits to Matilda's Mouse in Valley Center, CA. (near Escondido) They have such unique treasures at great prices! The catch is, they're only open one weekend a month, so you have to get on their email list to be notified! Kinda of an odd deal, but it works for them! We make the trek out there every couple of month's or so, and we're never disappointed!

I just love finding all of these wonderful items from "yesteryear"! Could this first lovely possibly be the original design for what we know today as the "Mud Flap Girl"? Hmmm...

Everywhere I looked, there was eye candy~I was almost overcome with too much visual stimulation~I think my eyes were dialating at this point...then I calmed down and proceeded with my adventure. Such wonderful treasures!

There were so many lovely goodies to see at Matilda's Mouse, that we spent more time browsing and taking pictures than actually shopping! I think we took at least 2 hours just to cruise the barn with our cameras! Then the shopping began! Actually, I was very good...I spent a whopping $9.25 on 3 items: an antique ciagrette case for $5, a small vintage hymnal for $4 and the find of the day...drumroll please...a vintage pocket dictionary for....25 cents! Ah, the smell of consumer victory in the morning!

My BIG SALE of the Day!

My Blue Dream Necklace! This was one of my first jewelry pieces that I made!

It contains two vintage costume earrings, frosted blue glass beads, small silvertone spacers, silvertone rolo chain and various glass beads and rhinestones. The centerpiece is a piece of broken porcelain that actually broke in the righ place for me! It's an outdoor scene of a Native American on horseback near a waterfall, with a tree and landscape around him-Fabulous! I soldered the edge of the china making it usable as a pendant. I am rather proud of this piece and am glad it has found a new home and will be enjoyed!

Hey, I found yet another use for my decanters and wine bottles! They make GREAT display vessels! Especially my Marilyn Merlot vintages-they are the perfect item to show-off my Marilyn necklaces-how's that for workin' it? The necklaces range in price from $35.00-$65.00- all are hand made and soldered by me in my home studio. No two are alike-all of my art is one-of-a-kind originals.

Below, are nickel plated credit card cases-these are made to look like the old fashionable cigarette cases. Inside they have a mirror and clip to hold your cash-etc. I'm selling these lovlies for $18.00/ea. the embellishments are distressed metal charms that I have attached to make these all the more cool!

My livingroom has been transformed into a fabulous Boutique! I still have it set-up...I really don't want to tear it down quite yet, being I put so much into creating it! Thankfully, I'm not entertaing this Thanksgiving, so I can leave it up as long as I wanna! (I'll get the house back to "normal" soon, don't worry...)

Having a total blast working non-stop in the studio these days~all in preparation of my Trunk Show and Boutique this Sunday, Nov. 20th from 3-7pm! The madness never stops-when I would get to a stopping point with my art, I would start working on the Holiday Dacor in the house! Against my holiday viewpoint- I NEVER pre-emptively decorate for one holiday when the the current one hasn't even happened yet! ie: decorating for Christmas BEFORE Thanksgiving! But, in this case I had to make an exception-my Trunk Show needs to be FESTIVE! So what's a girl to do? Climb that 6ft' ladder Baby and work those christmas lights! Whew! Now that most of the decorating is done, I can consentrate on my art again...I think the Stickles glitter glue has dried. Time to fire-up the glue gun and get creative!

I believe an introduction is in order...these are my Skully Girls. I created them a couple of years ago for the Halloween Holiday Season. this was a creation that just "popped out of my melon". I have since sold these lovlies, but have created a dozen or so more currently. My idea is to have them reproduced to sell at a more affordable price!

It's that time of year again, time to open up the Halloween bins and deck the walls with spiders, webs, pumpkins and all sorts of frightening fun! Halloween is by far, my favorite Holiday! I actually have more Halloween decorations than Christmas...and that's counting the tree and all of the ornaments! Ha, ha! While out walking the path this morning, I was amazed at all of the new things to be found that needed my camera lense! I had just walked this very same path yesturday! I always make it a practice to have my camera on me, even while walking myself and the dog.

I really love the trail at this time of the morning; even with the commuter traffice whirling by. I get sucked into the scenery and start excercising my artist's eye through the camera lense. So many new ideas in my head...now I'm hungry. Don't ask me the connection there.

I so Love the neclace designs from the 40's and 50's! So, of course, I just had to make my own verson of these time-honored pieces! I love to mix texture and opposing styles of beads to create combinations that you wouldn't expect!

In this piece I used some fun playful beads~I love the reds and light greens together. This one could be worn for the holidays...or not, just depends on YOU! I also had fun using polished bullet casings to accent this piece; kinda cool I think!

These Autum colors really appealed to me along with the oblong tile-look shape of the outer strand bead. This is a great look with any outfit~very classy without being stuffy. Love It!

These pieces are Steampunk Inspired and a bit Fun! Love using the Rolo chain-it can look so industrial, especially when you distress it with chemicals. I love the feminie touch of the crystal mixed with the sturdy urban look of the chain and gears~too cool!

My 3 Amigos Necklace!

"My 3 Amigos" necklace was quite a challenge to make. I wire wrapped all of the glass beads and glass flowers to the metal circle. Not hard to do, just time consuming~plus, I'm inventing it as I go along, so it takes longer because you're discovering it as it unfolds. attached a base piece to the back to secure the 3 skullies to, then added more flowery fun! Found an old brass chain that worked perfectly and Voila'! For me this piece represents the three most important people in my life that have passed away~ my little sister Rena, my Dad and my step-Dad, Ed. I just came up with all of this as I went along; I love how a piece just creates itself without you knowing it. And then you realize, it's perfect! It's all good!

My Day of the Dead Collection!

Turquoise and Vintage red glass beads-wire wrapped attached to copper rolo-chain. Love the blue skully adorned with crystal rhondels to make him sparkle! I finally found a home for my glass heart (symbolizing the Sacred Heart). Dangling from the heart is a distressed gothic cross with a blue rhinestone cross as the center accent, Fabulous!
Day of the Dead necklace with black glass beads and Vintage red beads all wire wrapped and attached to silver plated rolo chain. A bone-white skully is also adorned in crystal rhondels to make him sparkle! A cobalt blue glass heart is accented with a dangling gothic cross with crystal rhinestones in the center. Very Galm!

My more "earthier" version in the Day of the Dead collection. Milky green glass beads and vintage red beads are wire wrapped and attached to a copper rolo chain. Here, a olive green skully, also adorned with crystal rhondels, is attached to a red glass heart. This piece has the gothic cross with a soft green gemstone cross in the center. Lovely!

Organization 101

I recently made a trip to my local Ikea~I couldn't resist these cute little stainless steel mini bowls! they're perfect for corralling those stray little beads and findings when I'm working on a jewelry project. I'm always on the lookout for unique and helpful items to organize with.
Of course, everyone knows about these handy little "spice" jars from Ikea. I finally just HAD to have some of my own! (I purchased 2 sets.) They're perfect for storing all of those little embellishments that we all collect when creating: brads, eyelets, metal embellies, broken glass, used bullet casings, bottle caps, etc. You get the picture. Fantastic and cute to look at!

This is my discovery of the DAY! The ever useful Dish Drying Rack! When I was at Ikea, I had in mind to find something that would help me to organize my ever-growing collection of jars containing various items I use in my art. Before I received this momentous brain fart I would just stack the jars on top of each other down the middle of my two worktables. Now mind you, this was fine...until a minor earthquake hits, then there's scattered goodies and glass everywhere! Plus, all of this interesting storage was encroaching on my workspace. What I was able to do was, look at this item and think of another way to use it and voila' my jar rack was born! It stores all of my glass jars on a sturdy and tidy surface, I can still see what I have when I need it, and the rack allows me some much needed workspace! I Love It!

This is so effiecient, I can't tell you!

Now my work area is neat and more organized! I'm really digging this set-up!

Working in the Studio...

Hey Gang, started working on reviving a past project and giving it a tweak! My "Halloween Fairies" were created a couple of years ago and I miss them...(sold all of the first batch.) So, I decided to revisit this fun and whimsical project and add a little twist. The "Girls" will be a little more comtemporary and snarky, but all in good jest! Stay tuned...

I so love my new studio space! I totally converted my garage into 2/3 studio, 1/3 storage~I think that's a good fraction to work with! We always parked our cars in the driveway for convienience anyway, so the space wasn't being maximized, in my opinion. When I was closing the store the last 2 months, I decided to take advantage and as I liquidated at the store, I would clean out parts of the garage, and Voila'! I have a very functional art-space that's roomy and full of everything I need! Below are a few pic's showing my completed spaces. I'll try to post pics of the whole adventure from beginning to end. Just stay tuned...

I finally made some time today to get back in the studio and get some creating done! It's awesome how once you get in your groove, time and your own creativity just take you away...love it! It had been awhile since I was really able to get back to the studio; so much going on these days after closing my store and transitioning into being home full-time. At least for now...

Some recent goodies that I finished in my studio! Love this Gothic-Style piece so much, that I've been seen wearing it about town! Even showed it off on my recent trip to Vegas!

This piece was inspired by Vintage finds and various treasures I discovered while out near Temecula enjoying the sites with my firend Kathy. Okay, we were lost and almost side-tracked it to a casino, but resisted the urge and pressed on with our treasure hunting adventure! I especially love the little glass flower beads and the cross on the petina colored centerpiece, most cool!

Lounge Closing~The End of An Era

Well Gang, it's been a great run~and as the saying goes: "All good things must come to an end."
I've had a blast owning and working hands-on at the Scrapping Lounge these past 5 years. Meeting all you wonderful customers that made my day that much brighter was awesome! Some of you became friends that I will always cherish and am honored to know; and friends that I "dragged" into this I'm blessed to still have your friendships! Fabulous!

There is no other store around quite like the Scrapping Lounge, nor will there ever be~the Lounge was my vision that I was fortunate enough to see become a reality, what an awesome experience! How many of us are able to see a dream of ours actually come true? All, I hope.

As I close this chapter in my life with fond memories, I look forward to what the future holds. I'm actually excited to be working on my art full-time~and wouldn't it be cool if I could support myself with it? I intend to give it my all to see this happen!

Without my experience at the Scrapping Lounge, I feel that this next opportunity may have been delayed or different; things happen for a reason Gang! As I've been telling my customers when they come in feeling sad; "When one door closes, another one opens." I know this sounds like a cliche' but it makes sense. So, no long faces, the Scrapping Lounge will always be "The Coolest Spot" to hang and crop! This isn't Goodbye Friends, It's "See Ya Later"!

Just taking a break from my creating caos to let you all know that everything is going Great Guns in the Paradise Kitten Studio Gang! Working on so many cool new things for GlitterFest in March~ I can't wait to let the "Cat Outta the Bag" when I show my new goodies at the show. Everything from new purses, wallets, credit card holders, eyeglass cases to altered and mixed media art and jewelry! I'm so excited to be back in both studios madly creating! Man, I didn't realize it had been so long since my last post! So sorry for staying away for so long Gang! Well, it looks like September of 2010 was when I had last cruised by~since then I've been shopping, shopping, shopping! Of course, the flea markets are the best, but I do occasionally haunt the antique stores and thirft shops~also know as "boutiques".

One of my favorite things to go "junking" for is vintage jewelry bits. This seems to bring me great joy and satisfaction~just the simple act of finding that one misplaced, broken or discarded treasure makes me smile.

After getting through the Holidays, I found out that I was accepted by GlitterFest to have a booth in their Spring event! Don't miss it Gang, Sat. March 19th 10-4pm. There's a link in the upper right corner of this blog. You've gotta check out this show, it's the BEST! At the urging of some of my artist-friends, I sent off my application along with pictures of my work. (of course, I made an awesome denim book to display my pictures in.) Now, I'm madly working on creating a whole new inventory for the show! I have some awesome purses in the "works". In fact, I was just taking a little break and decided to get my blog up to speed! I've been having so much fun lately just "Treasure Hunting" and finding great images to create my crystal pendants with! I've been seeing other variations of this great design in magazines and here and there; but I needed to put my own spin on this fab idea. I'm still madly working in my studio finishing up my second "batch" of these lovlies and can't wait to bring them to the store for all to see.

I've really been enjoying my soldering and playing with mixed media to create these pieces; so much FUN! My latest piece of lovliness! This necklace took me awhile to make, being I was making it up as I went along. Now, I'm finally realizing, as with scrapbooking, that every piece doesn't need to be a perfect piece of art when you have to build an inventory! Unless you want to take forever to create your art pieces! I'm working on a system that allows me to mass produce the easier more commercial pieces while allowing for the actual art that I need to create! A delicate balance, but very possible to do. Soldering 101!

I recently took a soldering class from Irene over at Garden of Beaden in Upland, Ca. www.gardenofbeadenupland.com , what a total blast! I so love, love, love this form of art and the dimension it brings to my jewelry making! One of my favorite things to do these days is to settle in with one of my Somerset mags; I expecially love the jewelry publications, they ROCK! I've been getting so inspired by all of the fabulous art in these magazines, that I just had to take the next step! So, of course, after I finished the class I had to go out and purchase all of the right goodies , right? Now, my garage not only houses my "home gym" and my jewelry making "tool bench" but also my soldering workstation! As soon as I get it all how I want it (getting the donation pile outta there and moving the pet toilets elsewhere!) Then I'll post some pics! Along with being constantly inspired by all of the art around me, I love checking out other artists workspace; must be my organized Virgo side. I'll post more when I get some pieces done. Great little set of earrings I whipped-up the other night for an outfit. The fab charms are from my favorite new discovery, Garden of Beaden in Upland, Ca. What a fantastic little bead joint they have, very friendly and helpful! I also used what I call my "mutant beads" purchased at a yard sale for $1 (a whole bag of misfit beads, awesome!) I sorted them all out the other night by color and was inspired to create these earrings with the new "skully" charms I had purchased. and voila' love it! I discovered using chandelier crystals and "found" objects ie: antique earrings and jewelry bits, make wonderful and unique pendants! I used old book pages for the background (saved from tearing apart a book for another altered project...nothing goes to waste!) Soon, I will be learning to solder so I can add a different element to my jewelry making and "step it up a notch"!

These lovelies were made the same way, only without the fancies on top. Still fabulous, and personalized with individual stamped initials!

Humble beginnings of my pendants...I spotted this chandelier in one of my favorite haunts~got a great price for it, and the rest is history! Now, I just have to think of something to do with the lamp after the crystals are all off...maybe use it as a type of hanger for something...remember, nothing goes to waste!

Spring "Birdhouse" Project

Thought I'd post a picture of this fun birdhouse I made last Spring out of chipboard and paper. Now you have to understand, when I was a kid and had to make a simple 3-D box out of paper, mine turned out abstract! I had no idea how to make all of the sides equal! (this was in Mrs. Maruca's third grade class.) So, for me to come up with this project totally from scratch, with no measurements or plan to follow is HUGE for me! This piece can be functional too; just pop off the roof, and you can store all kinds of fun inside! (no live birds please!)

Hey Gang, I fianlly finished this piece entitled "Rose Ballet"! I kinda made it up as I went along, as I do with most of my art. I tend to get a picture in my mind, then move on from there. The paper roses were and inspiration from my fellow artsy friend, Lynn. She did a lovely version of these in fabric~which I'm now playing with. I think my next canvas project may be a larger size with either a bride or lady-in-waiting in a gown with a long train and flowers, to represent the beginning of Spring. I'll keep you all posted...

Holy Lip Balm Batman!

Hey Gang, I had a blast yesturday making my own lip balm in the kitchen! It reminded me of my lab days back in the 80's. (for those of you that don't know, I used to work as a lab assistant in a local pathology lab; oh the stories I could tell...) I dygress,

The little pots of lip relief are made of all natural ingredients; I made three flavors~lemon, orange and peppermint. I gave some to my hiking girls on the trail this morning and the balm really did the trick with today's windy weather! I also had fun making my own body scrub and face scrub, which I used last night; great exfolliators gals! And so easy to make using items that most of us have in our pantry. I also made what I call a dry "toothpaste" with baking soda, peppermint oil and dryed finely grated lime zest, refreshing! I love knowing the ingredients in some products I'm using, ingredients I can pronounce!

While trying to get home last night from work, I had to detour and take side roads for a bit. Being stuck in rainy, after-work, slow-moving traffic is NOT what I wanted to be in. Taking full advantage of my surroundings and situation, I remembered my camera in my purse and was able to snap-off these quick shots. (thanks to the stop sign ahead, I had time to do this safely!) "Record" Art Hits the Scrapping Lounge!

I've been at it again! I was so inspired recently by trying to reuse, recycle and repurpose, that I just had to complete this project! There are so many old, old LP's out there that are beyond being collected, or even played. The LP's that I selected were not on any collector's list (wouldn't that suck!) Also, they were scratched and past their useful prime. I saw this process done and thought it was must do for me. After making a sample for myself, I decided to make some "Mail~Magazine Racks" to sell at my store, Scrapping Lounge! I've made varieties ranging from a "single" up to a 4-stack of "wax" rack! While being very hip and cool with all of the "in" retro stuff, they're actually functional! I have a "single" in my office holding mail, and a "3-stack" by my copier with other paper items. I Have Finally Landed on All Fours...

To create this long overdue blog Gang! Whew, sorry it took so long; and please bear with me as I set out on my journey to create it and showcase my art, adventures and musings that insist on popping outta my head and into the real world for all to see! Currently, I am the owner of my own scrapbook supply store, Scrapping Lounge http://www.scrappinglounge.com/ in Montclair, California. I am having such a blast living my bliss and being able to craft and create my art at will while I man the store. Tough job, but someone's gotta do it! Prior to this awesome calling, I worked for many years in finance, then worked in my family's metal finishing business for 7 years, and now my own business. Let me tell you, there's nothing like being self-employed...no one telling you what to do (or anyone to listen to you), you can keep your own hours (12-14 hour days, 7 days/week), pay yourself what you want (if I made anything..can vary), benefits like insurance (paid for by me when I can afford it...don't get sick!), 401K (yeah, right, what savings?). Most of all, I do this for the freedom to create and the love of art and the wonderful people it attracts. I wouldn't have it any other way.
